Attic Revival

Cozy and Elegant Attic Bedroom Remodel

An attic can often be an overlooked, underutilized part of a home. However, with thoughtful design, it can be transformed into a comfortable and functional living space. In this 1909, 2 ½ story Craftsman-style home in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul, we worked to turn the attic into a cozy and elegant primary bedroom.

Continuing a Home’s Transformation Story

Having previously completed kitchen updates, a bathroom remodel, and a porch renovation in this home, we were delighted to be invited back to continue their remodeling journey. This attic bedroom project involved finishing the attic and adding a rear dormer to create a new bedroom, a walk-in closet, and additional storage areas—blending transitional and traditional design elements.

Maximizing Attic Space

Before the renovation, the attic was primarily used for storage and featured a single bedroom tucked into the northeast corner of the home, interrupted by angled ceilings that limited the usable space. The new layout thoughtfully utilizes the pitched ceilings, allowing for smart furniture placement and making the room feel more open and functional. Areas with lower headroom have been cleverly transformed into storage zones, making use of every inch of available space without sacrificing comfort or style.

Stained Beams Add Character

Vaulted ceilings make the room feel more open and airy. Finished along the angles, they draw the eye upward, adding interest and height. The stained poplar beams against the white ceiling add warmth and character. The dark beams contrast beautifully with the white ceiling, blending the home’s Craftsman style with modern touches for a perfect mix of old and new.

Dormer Addition

The dormer addition is designed to be both functional and aesthetically cohesive with the rest of the home. We used horizontal siding that perfectly matches the porch exterior, ensuring the addition feels like a natural extension of the house. Casement windows were chosen so we could meet the code for egress, as well as for their clean lines and functionality, allowing for excellent ventilation and natural light. The exposed rafter tails mirror the home’s original architectural detailing, keeping the overall character of the Craftsman style intact while providing much-needed space.

Quaint Sitting Nook

Inside, the dormer creates the perfect opportunity for a cozy sitting nook. This built-in nook serves as an ideal place to relax with a book or enjoy the natural light streaming through the windows.

Warm & Inviting Walk-in Closet

One of the standout features of this remodel is the spacious, custom-designed walk-in closet. Floor-to-ceiling open shelving makes it easy to grab your favorite pair of shoes or a purse, with everything organized and within reach.
