Five Takeaways from Master Builder University

We recently had the chance to attend Master Builder University, a conference led by Brent Hull, a nationally recognized craftsman and founder of Hull Millwork. Known for his dedication to preserving the integrity of historic architecture, Hull brings designers and builders together to discuss what it means to create homes that truly stand the test of time. The experience gave us a moment to step back, reflect, and refine our own perspective on building with purpose. We left inspired—and hope these takeaways spark ideas for your own home.

1. Homeowners Want Thoughtful, Historically Rooted Design

After years of cookie-cutter developments and sprawling “McMansions,” homeowners are craving depth, authenticity, and detail. They’re seeking homes that feel connected to tradition—where architectural references are intentional, not just decorative. This shift challenges us as designers and builders to reach back into history for inspiration and apply it in fresh, thoughtful ways.

2. Advocating for Good Design Matters

Great spaces don’t just happen. It’s up to designers and builders to educate clients, explain why certain choices matter, and advocate for design integrity. That means having both the education and the experience to back up recommendations. When we bring that knowledge to the table, clients feel empowered to make decisions that elevate their homes for the long run.

3. Small Details Can Have a Big Impact

Not every budget allows for sweeping changes—but even modest updates can add character. For example, introducing chair rail molding brings architectural interest to a room in a way that feels timeless and intentional. Thoughtful details, scaled to the project, can dramatically transform the feel of a space.

4. We Can (and Should) Build Better

This one is simple, but it carries weight: build better. Better materials, better practices, better craftsmanship. When we raise the standard—whether through more durable construction, sustainable choices, or elevated design—we ensure that homes serve not just today’s needs but tomorrow’s as well.

5. Proportion Is Everything

Ever walk into a room that just “feels right”? Chances are, it’s because of proportion. The art of proportion is what separates a functional space from a beautiful one. It’s not just about style—it’s about balance, usability, and how a room feels when you’re standing in it. Mastering proportion allows us to design spaces that are not only visually harmonious but also deeply livable.

Final Thoughts
At its core, Master Builder University reinforced that good design is timeless. It’s about more than chasing trends—it’s about honoring history, advocating for thoughtful choices, and never losing sight of the craftsmanship that makes a house a home.
