1924 Craftsman Bungalow: A Bathroom Remodel
In Saint Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood live two homeowners (and their beloved pets) who love their charming older home — it’s both cozy and full of personality. After remodeling their kitchen before 2020, they returned to us with a new request: to reimagine their primary bathroom. Their goals were clear—add storage, replace the tub with a larger shower, and create a design that better reflected the home’s timeless Craftsman character.
The rich green, handmade Fireclay Tile set the tone for the room, with black accents for contrast.

Custom Vanity with Architectural Charm
Because of the steep rooflines, every inch of storage had to be thoughtfully planned. The vanity remained in its original location but was redesigned to feel built-in and purposeful. The new vanity offers far more storage than before, while the refinished wood floors beneath provide warmth and continuity throughout.

The vanity’s door style was inspired by a surprise discovery during the design process.
Right outside the bathroom is a small architectural detail that perfectly captures this home’s character. Those shapes became the basis for the cabinet cutouts. To complete the look, hardware from House of Antique Hardware was selected to complement the custom millwork and reinforce the bathroom’s cohesive, tailored feel.

A Walk-In Shower That Balances Function and Style
Replacing the old tub with a spacious walk-in shower was one of the homeowners’ top priorities. A low half wall maintains an open feel while keeping water contained. The showerhead, from Signature Hardware at Ferguson, completes the look with timeless quality.
A gray-grouted black hex floor adds depth and texture without the upkeep of white grout.
